History of the Mt. Orab Fire Department

The Mt. Orab Fire Department was established in 1896 and incorporated in 1975.  Mt. Orab is one of the last corporate fire departments in the State of Ohio.  Our EMS service was started in 1972 by a group of dedicated citizens with a desire to help the community.

Our department currently responds to over 1400 emergency calls per year.  These emergency calls include fires, EMS, high angle rope rescues and hazardous material incidents.  Over the past 10 years, the Mt. Orab Fire Department has become noted as the busiest fire department operating in Brown County.

Our department is proud to assist in training emergency service personnel and serves as host to EMS students from area schools.  These students come from the University of Cincinnati, Southern State Community College, Mercy Clermont Hospital, Brown County General Hospital and even from as far away as Hocking Technical College. These students run with and are supervised by experienced personnel in order to gain a broader range of education than the classroom alone can offer. Our rural setting gives students a chance to administer more patient care than is seen by most urban departments.  The department also offers an observer program that allows area residents to “ride-along” and experience how the department operates.

Our department presently operates seven (7) fire trucks and two (2) Emergency Medical Service (EMS) trucks at Station 1, located on Spice St. in Mt. Orab. A second station, operating three (3) additional fire trucks, is located in Buford in Highland County.

Our department provides service to the Village of Mt. Orab, Pike Township, Green Township, Sterling Township and portions of Scott and Clay Townships.  We also maintain mutual aid contracts with all Brown County and Clermont County Departments.
