Mt. Orab Fire Cadets

Program Information

This program is designed for teens who live within the Mt. Orab Fire District and are between the ages of 14 and 18 years of age.  The program is designed to teach participants the importance of teamwork, cooperation, group participation, business operations, and fire and rescue skills.  Participants in the program are required to participate in business meetings, trainings, and carry a minimum grade point average in school.  This program does have a maximum number of participants.  The application process is quite simple.

1.      Obtain and complete an application.  You may download an application from this web site or stop by the fire house at 105 Spice Street, Mt. Orab, Oh. 45154 to pick up a copy.

2.      Return the application by dropping it off at the fire house or mailing it.

3.      The Cadet Leaders will review the application and assure the applicant resides within the Mt. Orab Fire District.

4.      The Cadet Leaders will contact the applicant to arrange an interview.

5.      The Cadet Leaders will arrange to meet with the applicant’s parent to review policies and get parental consent.

6.      The Cadet Leaders will present the new applicant at the next regular cadet meeting.

Participants in this program will experience many challenges that help them to prepare for a career in emergency services. Many of the participants from years past are still active with our department today.  Most past participants agree that the program provides a solid foundation for nearly any career.

Business Activities

The program is lead by two officers of the Mt. Orab Fire Department. The officers or Cadet Leaders oversee all cadet activities of the program.  The Mt. Orab Fire Cadets attend the Deparment’s regular monthly business meetings, as well as conduct their own business meetings.  Check the calendar on this site for 2004 dates and times.

Training Activities

The cadets are permitted to attend regular department trainings as well as participate in special trainings devoted specifically to their role on a fire scene.  These trainings are planned by the cadets and include such things as water movement, fire suppression, learning and locating equipment, departmental policies and procedures, and CPR.

Emergent Response Activities

Cadets are permitted to participate on emergent responses with the fire department.  Hours of response are restricted on school nights.  On a fire scene Cadets will learn the importance of scene command structure.  Cadet’s duties on a fire scene may include assisting firefighters with hose, equipment, water shuttle, hydrants, scene overhaul and various other duties as assigned.  At no time will a cadet be placed in a situation where they enter a burning building, perform rescue operations, drive apparatus or respond to hazardous materials scene.

Fund Raiser Activities

Cadets also participate in fundraiser activities.  All funds raised by cadet activities go into an account and are specifically set aside to fund the activities of this program.  These funds are used to purchase protective gear, gloves, helmets, flash lights, and uniforms for all participants.

Reflective Address Signs

One of the biggest fund raisers the cadet program has undertaken is the sale of reflective address signs.  This project not only provides funds for the program but also allows emergency response units to locate houses more efficiently. The reflective signs may be ordered in green or blue and can be made horizontal or vertical. Each address sign costs $11.00.  If you are interested in purchasing a reflective address sign contact Assistant Chief George Burba or Captain Brian Liming at 937-444-3945.  You may also stop by the department and complete an order form.
